Fishing Innovation: Harnessing Old Fridge Doors as Creative Gear in Gaza

NewsFishing Innovation: Harnessing Old Fridge Doors as Creative Gear in Gaza

In the challenging landscape of Gaza City, fisherman Khaled Habib has ingeniously repurposed materials to navigate the waters of the region’s fishing port. His makeshift vessel, crafted from discarded refrigerator doors and buoyant cork, exemplifies the resilience and resourcefulness that characterizes many in the area. As Habib paddles through the harbor, he confronts the stark realities of a fishing industry devastated by prolonged conflict.

The fishing sector, once vital to the local economy and food security, has faced unprecedented challenges following more than 15 months of increased tensions and bombardment. The widespread destruction of fishing boats has severely limited the livelihood options for the local fishing community. As Habib eloquently notes, “There are no fishing boats left. They’ve all been destroyed and tossed on the ground.” In response to this adversity, he has crafted a functional paddleboard from repurposed materials, allowing him to continue his passion for fishing while supporting his family.

In an innovative attempt to adapt to limited resources, Habib has also designed a fishing cage using wire to capture the few fish still available, although his catches remain modest. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Gaza’s fishing industry has experienced a dramatic decline, with average daily catches dropping to a mere 7.3 percent of levels observed in 2022, resulting in an estimated loss of .5 million in production.

With dwindling resources, Habib has modified his fishing techniques, now employing dough as bait while fishing primarily in the safe confines of the smaller port area. Despite a fragile ceasefire that took effect on January 19, which has led to a reduction in overall hostilities, the restrictions placed on fishing beyond the designated harbour remain perilous. The threat of enforcement from Israeli vessels continues to loom, stifling the ability of local fishermen to fully reclaim their livelihoods.

The determination of individuals like Khaled Habib highlights the strength of the human spirit amid adversity. The ingenuity displayed in creating sustainable solutions not only sustains families but embodies a broader narrative of resilience among communities facing similar challenges in the region.
