Denmark Takes Action: New Drone Flight Ban Enforced Amid Military Base Sightings

NewsDenmark Takes Action: New Drone Flight Ban Enforced Amid Military Base Sightings

Denmark has enacted a temporary ban on civilian drones in its airspace due to heightened security concerns, particularly in light of reported drone sightings near military sites. This proactive measure precedes a significant European Union Summit set to take place later this week, during which Denmark will fulfill its responsibilities as the current rotating president of the EU.

The decision to impose the ban comes amidst a series of incidents involving drones over the past week, which included the temporary closure of multiple airports across the country. According to Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, the nation is navigating a challenging security landscape and must prioritize the effective operational conditions for its armed forces and police in preparation for the upcoming EU meeting.

From Monday through Friday, Denmark will prohibit all civilian drone flights to eliminate the potential confusion between legal and unauthorized drones. Minister for Transport Thomas Danielsen emphasized the importance of this precautionary step, stating that the nation cannot afford disturbances that threaten public security, especially with the imminent arrival of European leaders.

The country’s Ministry of Defence has deployed various security measures following the recent drone incursions. While details about the types of drones or specific deployments remain undisclosed, the situation escalated a day prior with NATO announcing an upgrade to its military presence in the Baltic Sea, which now includes an air defense frigate. This change reflects NATO’s commitment to enhancing surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities in the region.

Copenhagen Airport witnessed a temporary shutdown earlier this week due to the sighting of larger drones in its control zone, leading to similar closures at five smaller airports shortly thereafter. Denmark is categorizing these drone sightings as part of a “hybrid attack” but has refrained from attributing direct blame to any entity, though speculation has arisen regarding potential Russian involvement. The Kremlin has categorically denied any accusations related to these scenarios.

Key international partners, including Germany, are also taking precautionary measures in response to the rising tensions. A German air defense frigate is reported to be assisting Danish forces with airspace surveillance amid these developments.

As political and security tensions in Europe continue to evolve, Denmark remains focused on ensuring the safety and security of its airspace and the well-being of its citizens during this pivotal summation of European leadership.
