Billionaire’s Yacht Capsized by Fierce Winds, UK Investigators Reveal

NewsBillionaire's Yacht Capsized by Fierce Winds, UK Investigators Reveal

Investigators from the United Kingdom have concluded that a sudden and powerful gust of wind is likely to have caused the tragic capsizing of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily last year, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals. The yacht, owned by British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was involved in a celebratory outing marking Lynch’s recent acquittal in a significant fraud case in the United States.

The incident occurred on August 19, when Lynch, aged 59, and his daughter Hannah, aged 18, were among those who lost their lives aboard the 56-meter vessel, known as the Bayesian. In a preliminary report released by the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), investigators noted that the yacht exhibited vulnerability to strong winds, potentially even those less severe than those observed at the time of the tragedy. This crucial vulnerability, however, was reportedly unknown to both the owner and crew, as it had not been documented in the stability guidance available on the yacht.

The investigation was launched due to the yacht’s registration in the UK, although collecting crucial evidence has proven challenging owing to an ongoing criminal inquiry by Italian authorities. According to the report, the Bayesian had been relocated to what was perceived as a safer position the day prior to the accident due to anticipated storms. However, at approximately 4:06 AM local time, the yacht, while motoring with its sails stowed and centerboard raised, was struck by winds exceeding 70 knots (81 mph), leading to its rapid capsizing.

Simon Graves, an investigator with the MAIB, indicated that the wind was a critical factor in the incident. He explained that the interplay between the wind pushing the vessel offline and the yacht’s stability attempting to right itself resulted in a precarious situation. The report has confirmed that high winds were indeed present when the accident occurred.

Among the victims of this devastating event were Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, both British nationals, as well as US citizens Chris and Neda Morvillo and Canadian chef Recaldo Thomas. Thankfully, 15 individuals survived, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares.

Recovery efforts for the yacht have faced setbacks, particularly following the tragic death of a diver involved in the salvage operation on May 9. Salvage efforts resumed recently, with Graves indicating that further examination of the yacht would provide a more comprehensive understanding of the events leading to the capsizing and possible escape routes for those on board.

Ongoing investigations will continue to shed light on this unfortunate incident, as authorities work diligently to uncover the details surrounding the fateful day.
